About the Artist
Where are you from?
I grew up in Massachusetts and have called Bar Harbor, Maine, home for over 40 years. When did you start painting, and what did you do before?
Before I began painting, I spent 45 years as a family physician, retiring in 2020. About seven years ago, I took a watercolor class at the local high school, which sparked my interest in art. That led me to ArtWaves, a local community arts organization, where I explored oil painting—and I’ve been captivated ever since. Oil has been my medium of choice for a while now, though I started with watercolors. I love the way oil painting looks, so I imagine I will stick with that medium.Where are you now?
I live in Bar Harbor, Maine, on the edge of Acadia National Park—one of the most stunning landscapes in the country and a continual source of inspiration for my art. During the winter months, my wife and I spend time in Arizona, where we enjoy hiking and taking in the dramatic contrasts of the Southwestern terrain. We also love to travel, exploring new countries and states with family and friends whenever we can.

When did you begin painting?
I started painting about seven years ago.Why did you begin painting?
Art has always been a part of my life. I’ve loved painting for as long as I can remember, and make it a point to visit art museums wherever I travel. My father was a portrait painter, so I grew up surrounded by art, but between a busy medical career and raising a family, I didn’t find the time to pick up a brush until recently. What is your background?
I was a family doctor for 45 years, and I’ve always been passionate about hiking, traveling, and being near the ocean. What inspires you to paint?
I find inspiration in the beauty of everyday surroundings—quiet moments, little vignettes, scenes that catch my eye. Lately, I’ve become increasingly interested in portraits, perhaps feeling the influence of my father’s work more strongly than ever. What are your goals for your work?
Simply to keep improving. I paint because I love it, and I want to keep growing as an artist. When do you paint most?
Mostly during the colder months. Summer is for outdoor adventures and time with visitors.

I’m happily “stuck” on oils. I started with watercolor, but oils won me over. Their depth and luminosity are unlike anything else. How long does each piece take to complete?
Anywhere from six to twelve hours, depending on the complexity. Oil painting usually requires multiple layers—four passes, sometimes more.Do you accept commissions?
Yes—as long as there’s no rush. I prefer to work at a thoughtful, steady pace.
